Tuesday, August 26, 2008
We are the leadership group that helps organize the Greater New York area, which is comprised of New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, and Connecticut, The Greater New York Steering Committee of the Human Rights Campaign is a diverse volunteer group of individuals working each and every day to bring the mission of HRC to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender and straight-supportive people in this area. By taking part in community events, prides, town hall meetings and partnerships with other organizations, these volunteers are working hard to support HRC’s efforts in the movement for equal rights for LGBT people.
The group is structured into several committees focusing on vital
areas of the work HRC does. They include: Community/Membership,
Political, Federal Club, Annual Dinner, Corporate, and Diversity; whose purpose is to coordinate and lead the activities that support HRC’s financial, activist, political, and community education goals
And this struggle for equality needs your help! Fill out the Volunteer Form here to learn more about how you can get involved. We hope to see you at one of our many upcoming local events!
SPOTLIGHT ON MEMBERSHIP & COMMUNITY EVENTS COMMITTEE
The Membership and Community Events Committee has been reenergized for 2007. The group has dedicated itself to expanding HRC’s outreach to the Greater NY community to grow and diversify HRC’s membership by providing new and existing members with fun, concrete ways to engage. This year has seen the introduction of several initiatives, including HYPE, the Women’s Initiative, and the expansions of our Pride Activities and Regional events.
HYPE stands for HRC Young People Engaged (HYPE) brings young
adults together to participate in educational events, and engage in
political activities. HYPE’s most recent successful event was a pool
party at Hotel QT with over 60 people in attendance, including an
appearance by Joe Solmonese.
PRIDE events included coordinating and marching in Prides in
NYC, Long Island, and Connecticut. The Pride Cruise that attracted 234 people who enjoyed perfect weather, dinner, open bar and had a great time. The Post Pride Party for NYC at Cielo was well attended enjoyed by all, as were all the Pride parades in NYC, CT and Long Island.
Women’s Initiative activities are off and running. From the
Monthly Socials at the Stonewall Inn, to the most recent WNBA Liberty Wine tasting party that attracted over 60 people, and a brunch in planning.
Regional Events like July’s Tee-off for Equality Golf outing
in Long Island attracted 165 people for golf and a BBQ. This was double the number of attendees that attended the outing two years ago.
